I have a really stupid question regarding this book. It’s my first time reading it and I just want to know if It’s a weird translation or if it’s me hearing a word wrong. They keep using a word that sounds to me like “toilet” to describe what somebody is wearing. It’s really bugging me because I laugh every time I hear it, since I’m not sure what they are trying to describe. Any help would be appreciated. I’m in part 3 chapter 17 currently, in case that helps.

It’s just an old school way of saying someone got dressed, put their makeup on, freshened up, etc. A lot of Victorian novels use the term, so I am guessing you are reading a British translator (probably Constance Garnett)
