The story it follows is set sometime in the 1800s or earlier on a island known for whale hunting. Nearly all the jobs on the island are centered around whale hunting and they make profit selling the meat, bones, and oil made from blubber.
The main character is a teen girl. She lives with her mother, step father, and step siblings. She grew up with her grandmother, the island witch. A curse was placed on her bloodline that every woman must feel terrible heartbreak and betrayal before inheriting their power. The main characters mother had been attacked by her lover, resulting in a permanent scar in her face.
The main character, while not yet having full access to her power, has premonitions. Her dreams tell her the future. One night, she has a dream that products her murder. Throughout the story, she tries to get more details about her death and find a way to prevent it.
