e.g.; The Wager made me instaquit non-fictionalized history (no hate just not for me), Bewilderment made me realize I need a book with lots of emotion once a quarter, and all of Eco’s books for some reason allow me to pause and google absolutely any word, person, place or concept I don’t know about. (which is a real pain when he fictionalizes quotes like in Foucault’s Pendulum). Just looking for the books that changed your pattern of reading.

I used to hate reading but after reading Neuromancer by William Gibson I realized that it could be fun.
Dune taught me that taking notes on characters or new vocabulary can make the difference between an epic read and a DNF. First attempt was a DNF until my wife said she took notes. I tried it and it worked wonderfully.
As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning- by Laurie Lee. Non fiction.
Very briefly, it is the story of a young man who travels from Northern England to join the Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War. Prior to this I had mainly read either spy or WW2 books , anything thrilling and violent. Midsummer opened up a world of politics, history, loss and extreme bravery. The book opened the gate to my wider reading. Everything I read that doesn’t involve someone getting shot in the first five pages ( which i still enjoy , go Reacher)is due to that book .
Thats crazy… The Wager made me instantly quit fiction reading and I’ve been on a nautical binge ever since.
The Dying Grass and House of Leaves both trained me to read slower and approach the page differently.
