Do you have a new book ready to go the instant you complete one?
Do you give a day or 2 before picking up a new book?
Do you stick with the original genre? Do you change it?
I have physical books, books on my Kindle, and books on hold on my Libby (Library) account, but depending on the book, I may give it a few hours or a day or 2 before I begin a new one.
Sometimes, I have a Kindle book I read at home and then a completely different book at work.
Depending on the book I may change the genre. I like history books but I get mad and will then need a light hearted book for balance.

No hard rule. Sometimes I start reading a new one within an hour of finishing another. Other times I feel I need more time to digest or decide where I wanna send my imagination next
As little as a 20 min episode of some show to reset my brain.
I always change the genre or theme of the book. Even with series I read different 1-3 books before starting the next in the series.
I try to have the next book ready to go as soon as I’m done. I typically am reading two books at a time as I enjoy listening to an audio book and then I also typically read a different book on my Kindle.
I read back to back, like literally start looking in my Kindle for my next book right away. I always have a book loaded in case there’s a read-able moment. Very occasionally I will get a few pages in and discover it’s not what I’m in the mood for, and I’ll just try another one instead. I have a couple of hundred books in there so there’s always options. (No Libby here, unfortunately)
I will usually swap genres though. I try to put a classic and a non-fiction in every five books I read to enforce the variation. Luckily there’s a lot of good non fiction out there. Sometimes I follow a theme – so for US Black history month last year all the authors were POC. Around May the Fourth I’ll go with space sci-fi. Stuff like that. It breaks me out of the circle of familiar writers.
I’m currently reading a huge book about Stalin, which is *extremely* grim. Pretty much *every time* a name gets mentioned the writer adds “(X was later imprisoned, tortured and shot/sent to the gulag)”. So I’ve read a few shorter books in the middle to keep my spirits up LOL
I often have multiple books on the go at once so will continue with one until I find a “main” book to preoccupy my time with.
It depends how the main book I’ve finished made me feel as to how quickly I pick up a new main book
Sometimes finding the next book is harder than it should be, so I like to get into series so I can just pick up the next book ASAP and jump in.
I usually either start the next book immediately or the next day if I finish one late at night.
Let’s just say I’ve been known for leaving a book halfway, starting and finishing another one (ooh shiny) then picking the first one back up (a month later maybe, if that one shiny book became a few more)
Of course sometimes I’ve had reading slumps (not reading for a week, two tops) but eventually a book appears and I’m back on track.
I don’t even wait to finish the previous one most of the time. I’ve long been stuck in a cycle of finding one Im really interested in, start looking for the next one about halfway through that one, start the next one cause I have no patience, then repeat.
Edit: I do this with audiobooks not paperbacks
I’m generally reading two books at once (one audio, one physical), and as soon as I finish one, it might be a day or so before I pick up another in that format, but I always have at least one book going.
there was a time i was reading a book a day lol. i would immediately start my next read.
I tended to stick to certain genres: in the mood for mystery, i would read them all until i got to one that sucked, then i would change genres
Whenever you feel like it! I go for a new book straight after, but above all, it’s important to remember that you’re reading for fun. So, whenever.
My bookshelf is full of books to read. Always ready.
When I’m reading a series I literally finish one book and then start the next book in the series. Have them teed up.
Will sometimes have a different book I’m reading on the old “purse Kindle” for when I’m waiting for someone or in line somewhere etc etc
First of all, I switch off fiction-nonfiction-fiction-nonfiction so when I change books I’m usually making a major change in genre and topic.
Second, I try to finish books at night so I can have a brain break and start the next book the next night. (I work a traditional day job M-F so I get most of my reading done on nights and weekends.) There are exceptions to this, of course, like when I’m on vacation. Sometimes I might wait a whole 5-10 minutes between ending one book and picking up the next.
Edit: I have about 30-ish TBR books at home nearly split evenly between fiction and nonfiction, so it’s not like I have to spend a lot of time waiting for the next book to arrive. I’m currently reading *The Song of Achilles* and I know that *Burnout* will be the book I pick up next.
