Hi, I’m going on a short vacation and I’d prefer to finish during the trip. Over the last few years I mainly stick to trying to read classics, biographies, or non-fiction… all generally leaning historical. I want to learn more basic knowledge and/or check off “must read before you die” classic types books. I like feeling well rounded. Some that I have enjoyed recently… Bill Bryson’s Home, Biographies of Edison, Da Vinci, Einstein. Waldon Pond, Jane Eyre, Rebecca, Farewell to Arms. Whuthering Heights, Why the Caged Bird Sings, Agatha Christie. I like when I hear mention of a book deeply rooted in society and I can say “I’ve read that!”
I am okay with thought provoking or sad… but not extremely depressing.
Any recommendations are appreciated and I’d love to know why you recommend them.

Nella Larsen’s Passing is considered a classic, the best book of an entire genre, and it’s also quite a short read. It’s a marvelous portrait of a family and critique of racism at the same time that it’s got a Patricia-Highsmith level of plotting.
