Need help with a suggestion. I’m mostly a horror and fantasy reader but I really want to get into mystery novels involving some kind of investigation. Whether it’s federal, local PD, or private eye, I want something where the reader gets to follow along, enjoy some twists and mentally try to solve the crime with the protagonist.
I’ve read Dan Brown’s Langdon series, but it feels more like an adventure tale and usually involves some kind of race against time at the end. I like Dennis Lehane’s standalones very much, but felt like the Kenzie/Gennaro series got a little cartoony at times. I’ve read a few Agatha Christie novels which are amazing, but I’m looking for something a little darker and more modern.
Thats about all I’ve read. I suppose what I’m looking for would fall in the same vein as True Detective, Se7en, Fargo, stuff like that. I was going to pick up Mr. Mercedes as I’ve read a bazillion King novels but then I got some mixed reviews.
Please suggest to me your favorite modern, dark mystery crime novels!
