What are your thoughts on gifting books? This New Year’s eve, a friend gifted me a book. I was elated, given my love for reading. It became the first book I’ve finished in 2024, and it was a very weird experience 😀 Let me elaborate. I tend to stay away from heavy topics or depressing reads as much as I can, because I read to take my mind off of things and don’t feel like I need to add any more troubles to mine. I admit that this can keep me from reading something of substance at times, but it is what it is. I don’t always go for light reads either, there’s a balance. I make sure the read’ll be worth it if I’m going to be sad.

So this friend gifted me No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai. I won’t go into details and spoil it for those who haven’t read it yet, but it’s definitely not something I’d gift to someone on New Year’s. Like, and it wasn’t how I wanted to kick off this year’s reading challenge. :’)

So what do you think about gifting books? Especially to people who don’t know very well. What themes do you go for? Do you like books being gifted to you?

ps: flaring the post as spoilers to be safe.

    1. Basically, I let my friends look at my bookshelf and take whichever book they want. If they actually finish the book, they can keep it. Otherwise, they need to give it back before I give them another one. I don’t think I’ve ever just straight up bought someone a book, but that’s mostly because I don’t know anyone who reads as much as I do

I love receiving books as gifts but I never gifted one (mostly because I don’t know many people who like reading). I don’t know the book you mentioned. The Goodreads summary is not very clear. What is it about and why is it not appropriate?
