New reader here! I was never a reader. I was an ICU nurse for the last 8 years and and four years prior I was busy in nursing school. So since high school I’ve only read a handful of books because I never really had time or just wanted to sleep!
I made the jump to a slower paced nursing job and everyone here reads 😅 What are some books or series that made you love reading?
Or if you’d like to drop your goodreads I’d love to add you and get some ideas too!

If you are into crime novels, Chris Carter series with detective Hunter got me into reading 5 years ago and im still obsessed with crime fiction books
Enders Game
Ruth Ware is an awesome author if you like mysteries.
The Harry Bosch novels by Michael Connoly
Romance got me back into reading after a ten year hiatus. Authors like Emily Henry and Abby Jimenez write witty, easy to read stories ahout relatable characters.
I fell in love with books as an early teen many, *many* years ago, so I’m sure the books I read that made me fall in love with reading are likely not your thing. But here’s some books I’ve read recently that were, IMO, gems. Also – full disclosure – there are some non-fiction books on the list because I do read both fiction and non-fiction.
* *A Man Called Ove* by Fredrik Backman
* *Lamb, The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal* by Christopher Moore
* *Frankenstein* by Mary Shelley (this one is relatively short but a good read)
* *Project Hail Mary* by Andy Weir
* My sister loves C.J. Box’s stuff – the Joe Pickett series and Sue Grafton’s ‘Kinsey Millhone’ books
Non-fictions
* *Grandma Gatewood’s Walk* by Ben Montgomery
* *The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks* by Rebecca Skloot
* *Wishful Drinking* by Carrie Fisher
* *The Last Campaign* by Thurston Clarke
I read these books when I was a kid and they were part of building that love of reading:
“I Am Legend” by Richard Matheson
“The Call of the Wild” and “The Sea Wolf” by Jack London
“Where the Red Fern Grows” by Wilson Rawls
“The Gunslinger” made me love reading when I was a teenager.
These books made me love reading as an adult:
“The Passage” by Justin Cronin, and the two sequels in the trilogy
“I Am Legend”, reread as an adult and just as much a masterpiece
“Home Through Sankara” by Arthur J. Flynn
Harry Potter (read the entire series as an adult) by J.K. Rowling
Also, thank you for what you do. Nurses are the heart of medicine.
I usually suggest books that really draw you in, keep you guessing and “don’t want to put it down” type thing to new readers.
BA Paris- The Breakdown or Behind Closed Doors
Lisa Jewell- I Found You
Lucy Foley- The Guest List
Peter Swanson- The Kind Worth Killing
Freida McFadden is my guilty pleasure and I usually gobble up whatever she writes as soon as it comes out and within a few hours. Her stories are really entertaining and I don’t want to put them down. One by One is a good one to start with from her.
You can’t go wrong with Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None. It’s just so, so good.
The first “grown up” book I read when I was a kid that kept me reading novels was Jurassic Park. Loved it then. Love it now. The Lost World is excellent, too. Light years better than the movie.
Probably more suggestions than you wanted but hope this helps!
Well I’ve loved reading since being a kid, my school forced us to read books and that didn’t effect my love of reading but rather enforced it.
I’d suggest The London Eye Mystery, about a kid whose cousin disappears on the London Eye.
I’d suggest A Good Girl Guide’s To Murder as well, which is about a Pip and Ravi investigating crimes.
Or The Inheritance Games which is about this girl Avery who gets put into a billionaires Will while his whole family is disowned.
If you want a book which is more slow paced then I’d suggest The Thursday Murder Club, which is about a group of old people who solve murders.
Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman
Goodnight Mister Tom
The Talisman by Stephen King was my catalyst.
“Man’s Search for Meaning”
Astrid Lindgren – The Brothers Lionheart and Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter. I was about 12y old when I started. Next came Jules Verne books.
