This could have gone in a number of different subs but I think this is the best one due to the variety of different people here. I see a lot of posts on here, but also on subs about music, film, etc, asking for recommendations for a book (film, song…) about a specific type of person, maybe in a specific situation. Like, I want a book about a strong female main character who deals with loss, or a queer character who battles dragons, or a song for when you hate your boss.

And I say this with absolutely no judgement at all, but that’s so alien to the way I go into a piece of art. The thing that’s important to me is discovering how another person expresses themselves and the more unlike my own experience/expression, the better.

Now, I’m in the *extremely* privileged position of being in the majority demographic of the place that I live, as a white cishet male. It would make sense to me if people outside of that position need something to grab on to as affirmation or inspiration. But I’m only guessing at that, in order to start the discussion, and there may be many other reasons that people have. Which I would love to hear.

So, why do you read (or listen to, or look at) art?
