Hello, only recently have I learned that Amazon offers a publishing service and that some authors have been New york time best sellers, I assume this is not the case of most of the people who use that service but still, how reliable is it ?
As a first time author is the best course to hire an agent to find the right publishing house for yourself?
FYI my book is not done yet I’m just inquiring because this seems like a difficult path to venture on to me, and perharps I am mistaken.

If publishing ebooks is like pattern sales than less than 0.1% takes over 90% of the royalties with most getting a few dollars. The indie marketplace really rewards those who can work social media to create a buzz that people have actually heard about it.
It comes down to pick your poison. Either way could lead you to bashing your head on a brick wall for years of minimal returns. Most potential authors fail. Even the ones that hit it big often don’t last long.
If you published through Amazon, how do you plan on handling your marketing? Do you have a social media presence and an existing audience? Most authors will rely on agents and support from a traditional publisher. You certainly don’t have to, but you need to be a very good marketer yourself if you go it alone.
But also, keep in mind that agents and publishers get countless submissions. Something like 2% of submitted works get published. Getting published and then finding an audience are both a mixture of luck and telling an excellent story.
