While the answer I think is obvious, readers can relate with a peasant/average looking/poor person more than they can relate to a king/ beauty/ wealthy person. Pertaining specifically to fantasy romance genre or subgenre, maybe I’m just not that well read but it seems that every main character either ends up with someone of a much higher status than them, or much more conventionally attractive then them, etc. Is the reason just that it is more difficult to write an interesting story where there isn’t such a wide difference in characters? Or is it that there is classism/lookism in readers where they want the interest to be conventionally better?
