    Hi everyone,

I am looking for books by female authors written in or translated to English that maybe fall within the genre of magical realism while still retaining the rawness of memoirs and contemporary fiction.

I really enjoyed Hardboiled and Hard Luck by Banana Yoshimoto, as well as most of her other books, but I am especially seeking that haunting tone of Hardboiled. I’ve read a few Murakami books (really liked The Strange Library) but I can’t stomach the misogyny, hence the female authors request. I also *loved* Happening by Annie Ernaux. However, I have found her other books to be a bit too sexual for me. I’ve read some other French authors, like Sagan and Duras, but find their writing a little antiquated for this specific search. Basically I want something raw and real with a touch of weirdness. So.. any ideas?

    Books I’ve loved:

    Hardboiled and Hard Luck

    N.P

    Kitchen

    The Lying Life of Adults

    Happening

    Like Water for Chocolate

    The Strange Library
