I read a book years ago when I was in school about a young man with magic powers living with his mother. He had a mentor, and he ended up competing in a tournament for magic users, only to find out his opponent was the girl he’d been seeing throughout the book. It was an amazing read and I’d love to find it again. Any help is much appreciated! If memory serves, they end up teaming up last second and trying to escape. But I could be misremembering that last part. Thanks!
