I 20F have read a lot of books through my childhood to now but somehow i missed the percy jackson train back in my middle grade reading days. The new tv series is getting a lot of buzz and i would love to read it. the characters are like 12 in the first book and i feel like it would be super fun and remind me of me and my friends at that age and i love adventure and fantasy stories so it seems right up my alley. i’m just worried it’ll be too young for me cause i know it’s a kids book series

I grew up with these books so I hope I can offer you some insight.

Like with other series I’ve read that are more kid/young teen aimed (skulduggery pleasant) you can notice the younger vibe of the characters and overall story. But while it’s great to grow up with these characters and age with them.

It’s also very interesting to read these kinds of stories from an older mindset, you can see different things because of that. I know i look at the books differently when I’ve read them back again.

Plus they get more YA mature and serious, especially in the sequels to the OG series and the other spin-offs.

So go for it and enjoy!.

    2. Im much older and thinking about re-reading them, but nostalgia might do part off the work for me.

I would say just give it a try, it doesn’t take to long to read and you can get it for cheap so even if it don’t hit you haven’t lost much.

    3. The Jackson books aren’t so kiddy that I think an adult can’t enjoy them. There’s a good bit of fun and whimsy in the series and the characters are solidly written in that ‘yeah a kid would do that’ rather than ‘oh fuck these annoying kids’ way.

    4. Nobody is ever too old to read any book at all. I’m a 53 year old, retired, college English instructor and I often read YA novels. Read whatever you like whenever you like.

those books gave me a lot of greek history and mythology knowledge that helped me pass classes in college soo i would say no

    6. Nope!

I first read the books when I was in middle school and then again when I was in college for nostalgia’s sake: imo there are a decent amount of times where you can tell the books were written with with kids in mind as their target demographic because of the middle school style jokes and whatnot, but definitely don’t let that stop you from reading them. For one, the characters are all pretty complex (even the non-monster villains) and they have good character arcs/overall character growth. The world building is also super well done and there’s a lot of random references to other misc. Greek mythology stories woven in to the story that are fun easter eggs, so overall it should be pretty enjoyable for first time adult readers too.

Also, from what I can remember, the Heroes of Olympus books are a little more mature since they follow characters who are like 16+ and have some rather dark plot lines at times, so for sure give these books a shot if you finish the PJO series.

    7. I’m in my 30s and just started reading the series for the first time and enjoying it! (Kind of sad it took me so long to get to it.) Give it a shot, and if it’s not your thing, you can always stop.
