What are the top “non-deluxe” imprints out there these days? Not trying to disqualify Penguin Classics Deluxe imprints for example, rather Folio Society/Subterraneum Press.
I love the Tolkien Harper and Collins, but I’ve heard their quality control isn’t so good. Still worth it imo, as the art theme is consistent, they look great on a bookshelf together, and they all have Alan Lee art.
Penguin Deluxe are good (based on the couple I have), but when ordering by newest, a book I bought YEARS ago is the third most recent. They do have a nice range though. They don’t have a consistent cover art theme, so that’s a point off if you’re looking to collect an imprint.
I have a few dozen Everyman Library, and they ARE good. Nice range, consistent art theme/board colours. Paper is thin, but good quality. Relatively cheap too.
Knopf (canada) has a great set of hardback Orhan Pamuks, deckle-edged, nice thick acid-free paper.
Still surprises me how relatively poor the current HB Dune releases are from Ace. They LOOK fantastic (that cover art is so good imo), but the paper quality is a bit subpar for its price range I think.
So, for your favourite authors, what publishing company do you prefer?

I like NYRB Classics, McNally Editions, and Persephone Books. They all do a lot of reprints and NYRB does a lot of translated books. They’re all really great quality and good paper and have french flaps and I love them. Vintage are pretty good too, but a bit of a step down.
