Hi! My husband and I have started to read The Count of Monte Cristo together and I am feeling a little lost.
I understand the major events that are taking place (Napoleon being exiled), but not much beyond that. Like… I had no idea what a marquis is.
Besides googling every time I don’t understand something, does anyone know of something I can read to better understand what is going on historically during the book’s setting?
I’m hoping this book is old enough, and popular enough that someone has written something to help. If not, Google it is!

Hey! I recommend checking out “The World of Monte Cristo: A Historical Context” by Robin Buss. It provides great insight into the historical background of the book’s setting. Happy reading!
