Hey all, I just finished the most recent season of TD and am itching for something else like it. I was thinking about why I like it so much (particularly season 1 and season 4) and I came to the conclusion that what I like about it isn’t necessarily the mystery but this thematic idea of what happens to you as a human being, and what happens to your soul, as your proximity to evil decreases – pretty much the same theme that’s present in Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.
As the boat crew in HOD go further up the river, closer and closer to Kurtz, their sense of self, identity, and perception of the world is challenged by the horrors inflicted on the people of the Congo. Similarity in TD, as the detectives get closer to the truth behind the case they deteriorate as human beings, becoming more and apart from “normal” people, but are compelled to push forward regardless.
Looking for any fiction book recs with similar themes, doesn’t necessarily have to be mystery, but I want to see how other story tellers have explored this idea. Thanks in advance!
