Hi everyone!
So I’m a cis woman but I joined a reading group made by a friend of mine where many of the people are trans women who work in academia and love reading. The ones who are most active in the group especially like to talk about books by and about trans women, so I’ve read all of the ones they recommended (and recommended some myself) until I ran out. I have so much fun talking with them about books, I know we might have to change topic soon but I was wondering if there are more we might like of the same kind. Here’s the ones I’ve read and how I liked them :
– Light from uncommon stars by Ryka Aoki – had actually been one of my all time favorite books before joining the group. I really recommend it! (I also read everything else she wrote, I liked Seasonal velocities most outside of this book)
– Detransition, baby by Torrey Peters – amazing book, one of the best I’ve read in the last few years
– I’ve also read Torrey Peters’s two novellas Infect your friends and loved ones and The masker, both great, I love everything she writes
– Tell me I’m worthless by Alison Rumfitt, this book blew my mind, it was amazing, even though I don’t usually read horror it was just so weird and good and just perfect
– Nevada by Imogen Binnie, it was a really good book, I really enjoyed it
– Every book by Casey Plett- I liked Dream of a woman the least, it was nice but I liked Safe girl to love and Little Fish more. They are good books, in this quiet cozy slice of life sort of way. A solid 10% of the text in her books is a description of how being an alcoholic feels, which can be a good or a bad thing depending on the mood you’re in. All the books are in the same universe and mostly town so It’s very satisfying to read them all
– Summer Fun by Jeanne Thornton, I liked it even though it wasn’t what you would call easy to read, things are always implied and often it was purposely confusing. It was good though
– Bad Girls by Camila Sosa Villada, good but really sad and dark at times, didn’t enjoy it as much as others in this list
– This one no one recommended me but I tried to look on my own for something we could talk about on the group and read A lady for a duke by Alexis Hall, a light historical romance with a trans woman protagonist. The first half was good, the second half was not imo. Unlike the other books in this list it wasn’t written by a trans woman
So… What next? And before you say, of course, nonfiction, I know but I’m so bad at reading nonfiction with the exception of autobiographies. Does anyone know any other book my reading group would enjoy?
