I (24F) have not really given much thought to reading since high school, but have picked up books here and there. I struggle to pick books now as I always worry that I will not enjoy the content and waste my time, no matter how good the cover or synopsis looks. I also work much more than full-time, so this makes choosing a good read quite difficult.
I have always loved sci-fi/fantasy, especially those set in some type of dark dystopian, twisted landscape. In school, I loved books like Maze Runner, The Hunger Games, Handmaid’s Tale, Alex Rider and all of the Brandon Sanderson books (I wish I could read the Mistborn series for the first time again). I’ve read a lot of George Orwell, too. I’m looking for something similar and tailored to adults – very dark and dystopian, something that will make me think about my worldview. Perhaps a sense of dread. I’m in desperate need to be recommended a mind-blowing read to re-ignite my passion for books again.
I like romance involved, but I’m not a fan of its overwhelming presence in sci-fi – a sprinkling of it is fine. Anything parallel to or metaphorical for societal issues/politics is also on the cards. I’m a climate and atmospheric scientist in real life, if that helps!
Sincerely, a novice in need.

Have you read Unwind by Neal Shusterman?
The fallen world trilogy by Laura thalassa
Dune. It is my favourite book series(scifi) ever.
The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch really fits the bill I’d say! Fantastic novel!
