I just got into audiobooks. I wasn’t sure what to start with, so I just picked from the list of recommended best sellers. I chose The Teacher by Frieda McFadden because it seemed like an interesting murder drama/thriller.

I’m sorry if you really like this book, but for me, it was a bit of a mess…I won’t post any plot spoilers, but there isn’t really much plot to speak of anyways, just a handful of “twists” that barely make sense.

My main issue is with the writing/editing (or lack thereof). This book could have been cut in half. The same idea is repeated ad nauseam. “My husband is hot, but I hate him.” “I’m an ugly loser in high school, but my teacher is hot.” “I like buying pumps.” These ideas come up in almost ever chapter, sometimes multiple times. And that’s basically the majority of the book. Just repeating these things over and over. There is maybe one paragraph or even a sentence of actual plot/character development each chapter.

I’m not gunna lie, it was a little exhausting for me to get through this book. Not to mention the actual twists that are supposed to be the selling point make no sense if you think about them for two seconds.

On some level, I get the appeal. It’s sort of like a high-octane action movie. I’m not saying the book needed to be a literary classic, but it should have at least not been frustrating to get through. It felt like most of the book was just wasting my time.

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me. Does anyone have any recommendations for more tightly and coherently written thrillers that maybe I would enjoy more?
