I think smut is frowned on in general in the book world (outside of romance specifically) and this sub (like much of the book world) also seems to look down on romance. Most romance asks get told to ask a specific romance sub-Reddit in a way other genres aren’t redirected here. (I also find when they do give romance recs it’s lit with romantic subplots more often than actual romance so I don’t think many romance specific readers hang out here.) Obviously there are exceptions because I’m a romance reader and answer here, but I’m in the minority for sure.

For smut specifically you are definitely better to ask in one of the romance specific subreddits

    2. Look at the post immediately below yours; someone is asking for erotic books, and they’ve got 85+ comments!

I think ‘erotic’ sounds a bit more intellectual perhaps to Reddit, and so people feel ok about responding. ‘Smut’ – no judgment here from me, just guessing – maybe sounds a tad low-rent, a tad non-literary? Idk, but that could be it.

Try re-posting with ‘erotic’ as your request, and see what happens?

    3. I can’t speak for an entire subreddit, but personally yah I do. IMO, it’s like asking for porn recs in a movie and film subreddit.

But it’s also incredibly easy to just scroll past and not engage with those posts, no different than scrolling past other genre specific posts I’m not interested in.
