Hi! I’m in AP Literature and have therefore been pretty much exclusively reading classics lately, since they should be helpful on the exam. So I’ve hoarded a bunch of classics from friends and who don’t need them and thrift stores, and I know for a fact that I won’t be able to read them all by the time the exam comes around. Which is fine, you don’t need to read every single classic for love’s sake, but now I’m genuinely anxious about what to choose to read. Classics I’ve gathered which I haven’t read yet include the following:

    *Don Quixote*

    *Crime and Punishment*

    *Of Mice and Men*

    *Catch-22*

    *Pride and Prejudice*

    *The Picture of Dorian Gray*

*The Bell Jar* (a Polish copy – specifying just in case somebody knows if the Polish translation is better or worse than the original)

I’ve been reading the first 20 pages of all these books and I still can’t decide which ones to commit to, and I have a busy schedule, so I want to optimize my time and read something I’ll really enjoy. For reference, my very favorite book is One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey – I tend to love books whose protagonists or narrators seem crazy but actually just have a unique understanding of reality. I also liked No Longer Human for the same reason. Something philosophical and thematically-interesting – humor is great, but I’d also like it to be emotionally moving. Also a sucker for pleasant or unique prose, like in Lolita or House of Leaves.

I hope that narrows some things down. If you guys have read these books, please, knock me out of my limbo and suggest me which book I should read first!!! Or just say which one of these is your favorite, that’s helpful, too.
