I feel like there’s a decent amount of books out there where you have a fairly unassuming (but still compelling, and usually with his own inner turmoil) narrator cast suddenly into the middle of a glamorous, tragic world, who then acts as largely an observer to the craziness around him and barely escapes with his own sanity in place. Examples include The Secret History, The Great Gatsby, and Brideshead Revisited. What’re some versions of this plot with a female narrator? (I’ve read Bunny by Mona Awad, which I felt came somewhat close to this, but it was too facetious for my preference.)
