My son is in 3rd grade and they just finished their first “big” book, Because of Winn-Dixie.
He kept asking what “pinch faced” looks like and what busking means. So I blew his mind and we watched the movie. He had such a great time comparing what he thought the characters looked like in his mind to the ones cast in the movie.
What are some other short books like this with a movie we can do the same with?
TIA!

Holes (Louis Sachar)!!!
try Percy Jackson. while the movies are not great the books are intriguing and easy to follow. i read them out for my younger cousin and he loved them.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett (watch the 1993 movie adaptation by the way)
The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame (I’d recommend the 2006 movie as it’s most similar, but th 1996 version is great fun as well)
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl (there are even two movie adaptations and personally I do like both)
Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter by Astrid Lindgren (there’s a movie adaptation from 1984, which is just wonderful, then there’s an anime series, which I haven’t watched yet and in march(?) Netflix will release a live-action series of the book)
The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke (that one is actually longer… around 400 pages, but maybe for later because the movie and the book are both wonderful)
You could also look into Kate DiCamillo’s other books: “The Tale of Despereaux” and “The Magician’s Elephant” both have been adapted into animated movies for example. (It’s been really long since I’ve read/watched the former and I have not read the latter, but really liked the movie.)
