Other than the supernatural or sci-fi nature of the cataclysmic event, everything else about the world is reality based. No aliens, robots, magic, vampires, etc.
Is there a name for this genre?
I’m more interested in the effect the cataclysmic event has on the characters’ lives and society as a whole rather than an exploration of the cataclysmic event itself (though I have no objection to a story that combines both).
For example:
The Leftovers (2% of the world population disappears without a trace)
The Measure (everybody learns how long they will live)
The movie Another Earth (a parallel Earth appears in the sky)
If the book is apocalyptic, it should not be immediate. They discover a meteor on a collision course with Earth. Oh no! But it won’t hit for another 30 years.
Under this category, I liked Age of Miracles but could not get into Children of Men.
So what are your suggestions?
