For me it’s this book called *How Starbucks Saved My Life.* It’s about this guy who spends most of his life in privilege, at the top of his field. Then late in life he suddenly gets laid off, and picks up a humble job as a Starbucks barista, where he learns about other people in a way he never had before. I first read it in middle school and thought it was a beautiful story about a man who went through a rough patch, but came out a better person. I reread it in college and was unimpressed with how ignorant he had been for the majority of his life, and all these revelations he described felt like common knowledge. The writing itself is also primitive to be written by a grown man, but maybe that’s why I got along with it so well as a kid.

Another one is *The Clique* series. They’re middle grade books that were my favorite. I still respect them for the age group they serve, but man I can’t believe I read nine of them.

I have a reverse one. I read Harry Potter in elementary school and hated it! It took me forever to read and I thought it was so boring. I read it again maybe 2 years later and absolutely fell in love with it! Not many books that I’ve read I’ve hated.

      Catcher in the Rye.

Loved it at 16. Holden was so deep and he was so right about everything.

Hated it at 26. Holden was a whiny baby who just needed to pull his head out of his ass.

Loved it again at 36. Holden was a neglected and abused kid who was failed by pretty much every adult in his life.

I’ve had the same copy for 20+ years. I love seeing what young me highlighted and made notes about.

There’s no specific book but an author. I always read adult books as a kid. I didn’t start reading my fav genre or young adult until I was in my twenties. But Stephen King. And honestly, I think I only read his books because my mom loved them.

After his book of short stories…Everything’s Eventual I think it was called I never picked him up again.
