Suggest me a book for all 50 US states

Hi,

I’m planning a project for 2025, reading my way through all 50 US states.

There are online sites that recommend books for each state. My problem is that often the content of those books has hardly anything to do with the state they are matched with. Or (as an example) the North Carolina protagonist moves to Florida within the first 50 pages and NC is never mentioned again.

The stories I’m looking for do not have to take place in one particular setting entirely for the whole book. But they should have a strong connection to the particular state they represent.

I prefer (literary) fiction to non-fiction.
The era doesn’t matter; I read everything from classics to contemporary novels.
I don’t care for gooey romance novels or gory horror stories.
