I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for books about Arctic or Antarctic expeditions that have the same feeling of shrouded mystique and breakdown of man’s “civilized” instincts in the face of stressful conditions as Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness.”

Ideally, this would be a historical or realistic fiction book, but a narrative non-fiction works as well. I’d also prefer something in the public domain but I’m not super attached to that.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated 🙂
