I’m not really sure what word describes what I’m looking for, but maybe it’s descriptive prose? I love the way that the following books go into fine detail of settings and backstories of characters that may or may not be entirely necessary to the plot but paint a more immersive, intricately defined world for the reader, or evokes empathy for even unlikable side characters.
Examples include:
– The Rabbit Hutch by Tess Gunty
– The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison
– This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
If you’ve read those books, maybe you understand the similar thread I’m pulling at… what do you think is the word or phrase I’m looking for?
What else should I read in this vein? Open to various genres, but prefer sci-fi or thriller. Not interested in dsytopian tropes of factions (e.g. Red Rising, Divergent or Hunger Games).
Curious to hear your suggestions!
