Hi all! I’m looking for some good books on the so called “dark ages”. I feel like I can never find any detail on the period from the fall of the Roman Empire, until around the reign of Alfred. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
D.P. Kirby – The Earliest English Kings gives a good overview of the political history of England up to king Alfred.
Also, “The Ecclesiastical History Of The English People” by Bede is definitely worth a read if you’re interested in this period. It’s a history book written by a monk in the early 8th century, mostly covering the relatively recent events in England (with of course a strong religious focus, but it also talks a fair amount about the political situation).
