The story follows the corruption and downfall of a young man who falls in love with his own portrait and image and wishes to never age. He basically “sells his soul” to the devil in exchange for eternal youth and beauty. His vanity and desires consume him. His two friends Basil Hallward and Lord Henry Wutton have a significant influence on him, especially the latter whose treacherous philosophies and misguidings play a key role in corruption Dorian’s mind. The novel is brilliantly written and explores the whole dichotomy of hedonism and abstinence in a way. It’s a great commentary on how one’s obsession with one’s vanity and arrogance can ruin everything. There are so many quotes on this book, it’s insane. Lord Harry is such an interesting character who is irresistibly wicked. The book is easy to read, especially for a classic, except that one insufferable chapter 11 hehe. Also the wonderful gothic atmosphere created by Wilde in the novel! There’s a certain wit and ease and beauty in his writing!4/5 for me!
