I just finished (as in, about ten minutes ago) The Darkness Outside Us by Eliot Schrefer and died a million deaths. It was the most gripping piece of literature I have ever subjected myself to in my entire lifetime and I need more immediately. Spoilers but >!what you think is a simple rescue mission ends up being a 30,000 year long mission to inhabit a faraway exoplanet where the ship is cared for by the clones of the main characters, years after all lifeforms on earth have perished.!<. As someone who grew up gaming more than reading, it reminded me a lot of the Xenoblade Chronicles RPG series and the Danganronpa series in the sense that it ends with an insane mindfucky twist that has to do with the fate of humanity itself. I originally read it for the gay bits and sci fi, so if any recommendations have gay bits and/or sci fi that is a huge bonus, but those things PALED in comparison to the mindfuck plot. To be more specific, I’m looking for a book that starts off fairly simplistically, but at some point has a mind bending twist that completely shatters reality and changes the outlook of humanity forever. I’d like it to have some fantastical elements, whether it’s set in a fantastical world (a la your typical JRPG) or simply in a science fiction-y far future, but that’s not 100% necessary. Again, bonus for LGBTQ characters. Thank you so much!
