Loved Piranesi and I’m big on science fiction. I’m looking for something in a more exotic setting but basically with the same vibes. Limited characters, mysterious landscapes, quiet. But not too hallucinodreamy – a plot with characters I enjoy is nice.
More vibes:
– There was a scene in Becky Chambers’ *To Be Taught, If Fortunate* where the crew of a spaceship had to hunker down for ages in their ship on a hostile ocean planet.
– Like Armada in Miéville’s *The Scar* but hold the weird depressing shit.
– For all the tropes, J.S. Dewes nailed some aspects of this feeling in *The Last Watch*. Just camping out by a big black mysterious nothingness, millions of light years away from anything.
– For perspective, Octavia Butler’s *Dawn* would be going too far in the other direction. A bit closer to the ground. *The Martian*? Too close to the ground. Get me higher.
– Like a lighthouse keeper who gets teleported to an ocean exoplanet with his lighthouse and just keeps on lighthouse keeping while figuring out the planet. Somebody write that; I’d love that.
Anyone have anything like that? I’ve got a gift card and I’m not afraid to use it.

If the Martian is too close to the known, how about “project hail mary”? There are extremely few characters in the current story, but if you more when they tell what happened before this in the memory flashbacks.
