I just finished James McBride’s Good Lord Bird and I was really taken by it. It didn’t do anything extraordinary in terms of novelty, but it’s such a well written book. The way he fleshed out these characters and turned John Brown into a Quixotic character. There is so much going on in this novel—from race, history, gender, religion, etc. It’s just so good.
