I was wondering for a while now, if there are some fantasy/sci-fi books that focus around the exploration or expedition into an unknown and strange world. (Into the Abyss is similar to this idea)

I really crave to follow a journey into a strange and alien world, where noone really knows what to expect and what is awaiting them at the end. The kind of story, where you don’t know what to expect next but it keeps you craving what kind of freak entity/area/problem they discover next and how they manage to overcome – bonus points if this is not to gamey or formulaic – as in, they meet problem, they overcome, they progress – at best, all the problems and risks somewhat accumulate/return/increase and the group or the protagonist just gets better at getting along.

Bonus Question – this hits the same problem, but in a much more contained environment – I kinda enjoyed the struggle of kvothe in the beginning of the first kingkiller book, where he was getting around in tarbean – or the journey of kaladin, from Stormlight Archive, getting into the warcamps and becoming a bridgeman, before he became the stormblessed – You know, the story of a misfit just following the currents of his live, getting into trouble and managing to stay alive. Figuring out his life and place in the world, but not really knowing about the end of his journey.
