Hi everyone,
I am looking for a book that describes magical creatures and their lore for a 10-year-old girl. Think Pokedex but fairies, unicorns, trolls, etc. She wants to write her own book including magical creatures and wants a book to reference them.
Her mother had requested that it specifically be age appropriate. She had concerns about the rape history of certain creatures (Minotaurs? Centaurs?)
One book that came to mind is Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. I’m not sure if that book is only the lore of Potterverse creatures from the mind of JK Rowling, or if it’s more broadly applicable.
Thank you for any suggestions! The birthday is this Friday so I have a limited time in which to locate and order the book.

“Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide” could be exactly what you’re looking for! Knowledge of the main book series isn’t necessary; I hadn’t read them as a kid but I loved the field guide. It does lean more heavily into the novels’ specific interpretations of folklore, as opposed to a more general encyclopedia.
