I finished 400 pages of this book; the first 300 were magnificent, but then I started getting bored with the entrance of Franz and Albert. Dumas explains in tedious detail everything—the tables, the walls, the ceilings, the colors of everything, whatever. Now I finished a chapter on the carnival in Rome; I was bored to death; it was all about describing a carnival in the slightest detail.
I don’t want to give up on the book; I was mesmerized by Abbe Faria and his discussions with Dantes. I don’t care about Albert and Franz; they are so boring and lack depth until now.
Would the story develop in terms of plot and deep discussions? Or should I expect never-ending descriptions for the last 700 pages?

If you’re not too insistent on a full version, there are condensed versions about half the size of the original.
It’s definitely going interesting places, if that’s what you’re asking.
I’m reading now too and only a few chapters ahead of you.
Did you realize who Albert is? I didn’t right away, but once I did it made this part of the plot more interesting.
There are differences in various translations too, particularly in the Count of MC. There are old versions that are missing things.
