I am currently 90 pages from the end of this book. In the first half, most of the characters were somewhat likeable. Now as I have reached the end most have showed their true motives and character flaws. Truly a humanistic story! So, I’m curious what others thought of the characters.

Favorites: Dorothy, Lydgate, Will Ladislaw and the Garth Family.

Not-so-good: Rosamund, Bulstrode, Mrs. Cadwaller, Raffles, Fred Vincy, Mr Vincy, and Causabon.

I believe several of the characters cannot see interest in life beyond themselves and their status. Especially Rosy, Causabon and Bulstrode. Due to these actions, unfortunately, they cause other people around them to suffer. It is almost painful to watch them destroy others opportunities to grow in life to benefit themselves. This causes the opposing characters to suffer the consequences of their fellow townspeople.

I actually think that part of what makes this book so special is that the characters all have things to admire and things that make them seem human about them. She really shows people at their best and worst with idiosyncrasies and histories and motives. I’m not sure I actually have an answer to your question, I loved spending time with all of the characters and learning more about them. I had a Middlemarch sized hole in my life after I finished it, but I’ve moved on to David Copperfield.
