So I had a 15 year reading slump and got back into reading this summer. Before the slump, I was a voracious reader.

One of the books I had read earlier this year, Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, and the word, **Carapace** , a term I had never encountered before (at least not that I can recall), was in the book. I looked up the meaning, and went on with my life.

Then, in nearly every book I’ve read since then, **Carapace** showed up. So I looked up the usage on Google, and it said that it’s in decline. So I found it even more odd that I’m seeing it everywhere. It’s like this word is haunting me now.

And that made me wonder, are you experiencing similar with another word?

    1. I’m not sure if this answers your question, but I keep a list of unfamiliar words with their definitions as I read and have been doing so since about 2012. It has really helped expand my vocabulary.

If you’ve never read Mervyn Peake or China Mieville, I’d encourage you to do so. I have so many new adjectives from them.

    2. One morning, when u/Pristine-Fusion6591 woke from troubled dreams, she found herself transformed in her bed with a giant carapace.

    3. I remember how one of my university professors told me that something I wrote or said was **idiosyncratic.** I was aware of the term, but never gave it much thought before. After that, however, I started spotting it everywhere: in books, in lectures, in casual conversation even. Everything had turned idiosyncratic all of a sudden. It was quite a while ago, so I’d already forgotten it by now, but I bet it will start popping up again after this.
