Suggest me a book about the creation of Israel.

I want to understand the period of roughly 1940-1960. Doesn’t have to be an easy read but I do enjoy non fiction that reads like a story. One of my favs is guests of the ayatollah as an example.

Also any thoughts on whether leon uris’ Exodus is worth reading?
