I just finished “Gould’s Book of Fish” (subtitled: “A Book in Twelve Fish”) by Richard Flanagan.
The only word I can use to describe it is: Whoa.
What a wild ride. I feel like I’ve just lived that entire life with all of its insane ups and downs. I set it down, with this mixed feeling of elation, horror, amazement, and awe. Knowing that it is (extremely) loosely based on a real person and real events messes with my head even more than the novel itself.
The book hits hard. That’s as much as I want to say because it’s so unique that almost ANY detail would be a spoiler.

It’s on my to read list. I absolutely loved The Narrow Road to the Deep North but wasn’t a massive fan of The Sound of One Hand Clapping and so I decided to put him on the long list for a while but I’m glad to hear you recommend it.
Richard Flanagan is *intimidatingly* clever.
