Hiya, I’m going to turn 17 at the end of April, and lately I’ve been going through it. I’ve been diagnosed with chronic depression and severe anxiety since I was like 12, and since then I don’t do much anymore. Don’t read, don’t eat, don’t sleep, etc.
As I address these issues and the new ones coming up in my life I’ve decided to pick up reading as a coping mechanism, a hobby and a way to better myself. I plan to get a kindle for my birthday, so that there isn’t a risk I’d leave it to collect dust on my shelves or get distracted with notifications from my phone. I’m really clumsy and my paper books are in shreds (not literally 🙁 ) in no time. I think overall it’d be the best choice for me.
If I’m gonna be honest I don’t really know what I’d like to read.. I liked fantasy but who didn’t when they were 12? On my reading list from 100 years ago, I have: A Tale For the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki and An UnKindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon which I found interesting. I also read Honey Walls by Bones McKay a while ago and I really liked it.
I do like mental health themes, and fantasy, I’d love to read a book that explores themes of gender identity or religion/religious trauma as that hits pretty close to home but it’a just a quick thought.
I don’t know if I said enough to get good suggestions but I’m willing to answer any questions to help
Thank you 🙂

A fantasy series I love with some mental health themes (mostly trust issues and occasional depression due to trauma) is books of the Raksura by Martha Wells
A fantasy and scifi (contract with the devil + aliens disguising their space ship as a donut shop) with a trans protagonist which I absolutely love is Light from uncommon stars by Ryka Aoki
