Poli Sci/ Econ history nerd here with a penchant for reading too much. I’m taking a class on the transition from Keynesianism to Neoliberalism and am working on a paper about the policy choices that influenced the Post-Fordist transition (from a manufacturing-centric economy to a services – esp financial services – centric economy).
I’m really interested in finding a good novel (fiction) about this “vibe shift” that happened during the 70s-90s or a novel that illustrates neoliberalism more generally regardless of time period. I’ve yet to find any good fiction about this but I feel like Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) does a great job of capturing the rise of hyper-individualist neoliberalism in its own soft sci-fi way. Sorry To Bother You (2018) was also a fantastic satire about the absurdisms of our contemporary neoliberal world. In books, all I can think of is Parable of the Sower which IS so so great, but I need moooooore.
I tend to prefer literary or historical fiction, and would really really kill for some good recs there, but I can also get behind the less convoluted variants of sci-fi/fantasy.
Anyway, thanks so much for your time and recs! I can’t wait to read em!
