Hello! So one of my first sports fiction which I really loved was Tony Winters by P.S. Powers. There was little to no romance involved, it revolved around grit and determination and how he overcame himself, the sport was MMA which I really like. Other books I have read which are similar and would also recommend are:

Sooley by John Grisham (basketball)
Player Manager by Ted Steel (football/soccer)
Carrie Soto is Back by Taylor Jenkins Reid (tennis)
Realistically looking for something modern like Tony Winters, Sooley or Carrie Soto. Either way would really appreciate any recommendations with romance not being the main plot aka the hundreds of hockey recommendations on amazon. Extra points for sport being MMA or football/soccer.
