Hello book lovers 🙂
I’ve been getting rather overwhelmed at the local bookshops lately and either leaving with nothing or panic buying books I forgot I already owned. Which I then have to sheepishly return.
I’d love to go in with a few good suggestions next time to help me stay calm and not make bad choices lol
I like many different things when it comes to books but I do have a preference for fantasy or historical fiction. I also enjoy the classics; my favourite book is North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. I also like vampire stories, anything set in the past, anything a bit gothic, witchy or generally magical. I don’t mind if it’s a real world setting or a fantasy world.
I don’t like sci-fi, too much gore or horror, spy, western or anything really modern or urban or anything involving politics. I don’t mind romance but nothing on a mills and boon level.
I don’t care if it’s a stand alone book or a series.
While I’m pretty sure most books are available universally, I am in England so it needs to be something I can find here.
Thank you so much! Xx

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
Do you think it might help to make a spreadsheet of all the books you own? That way if you have it on your phone you can quickly check if you already have a book.
Here are some that you may like:
* Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. Historical fantasy with incredibly well written characters.
* Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone. Urban fantasy with a witch-like main character. There’s also vampires. I know you said you don’t like anything really urban, but this is an urban fantasy world so perhaps you will like it.
* The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro. Historical fiction about the time period in between the two world wars.
* The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. Historical fiction about a woman from an old money family and the calamity that struck her family. What calamity is it? You’ll have to read it to find out!
Get a library card and sample as much as you can, if you have Libby even better.
Then buy a book which you really liked reading and want to keep as a collection. Or buy a book that you sampled, or couldn’t finish within loan period but really liked reading.
This way you will be less overwhelmed
Fantasy books that read as an historical memoir are The Memoirs of Lady Trent by Marie Brennan. The first book is *A Natural History of Dragons*. Lady Trent is a world renouned naturalist who studies dragons. The books are her memoirs of doing so.
Log all your books on Goodreads if you don’t already! I’ve created a separate shelf for books I’ve bought but not read yet.
In terms of reccos, I’d suggest Fingersmith by Sarah Waters.
