I love the Woody Allen movies that show the characters just enjoying the city, going to art shows, popping into the cinema because they see a movie poster, walking on the streets and talking… the shots of the city with the great music. Heaven!

I love Vivian Gornick‘s books when she she writes about walking through the city and seeing things, remembering and philosophizing. You feel the passion for NYC coming through.

Can anyone recommend me any more books that have this quality? They don’t have to be centered around New York. Any city is interesting to me.

I’ve already read Flaneuse by Lauren Elkin and Open City by Teju Cole. I’ve bought Olivia Laing’s Lonely City but haven’t started yet.

Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino is very fragmentary and poetic but is just short descriptions about different fantastical cities (or just romanticized Venice) it might be up your alley but something a little different
