About a year ago I moved to a small island in a foreign country where English is not the main language. Unfortunately for me there’s only one small second hand bookshop, and I’ve heard the owner is… not so nice (which seems to be confirmed by his attacking people online who review his store). Therefore every time I go home I basically bring an empty suitcase to fill with books to bring back with me. I do have a kindle but I enjoy reading physical books, and I’m going back to the US for a wedding in a few weeks so it’s time to start planning my book haul!

Favorite genres include – mystery/thriller/horror, fantasy, nonfiction biology (especially about the ocean or plants), memoirs or biographies of interesting people, historical fiction… I’m open to a lot, don’t love romance though.

Fav books/authors include – Stephen King (It, The Stand, The Shining/Doctor Sleep); The Passage trilogy by Justin Cronin; John Irving (Prayers for Owen Meany, Cider House Rules), Agatha Christie, A Song of Ice and Fire series, Harry Potter, Gone Girl, the Wool trilogy, Imaginary Friend by Stephen Chbosky, The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts, The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery, Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett, The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben, House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski, Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes.

Currently reading book 4 of the Red Rising series (really enjoying), No One Gets Out Alive (I was so excited because people said it was scary but I’m really struggling to get through which is rare for me), and Hunted by Darcy Coates (enjoying so far). I can’t remember the author but I’m also reading a biography on Catherine the Great which is fantastic.

Recent books I did not like: The Troop by Nick Cutter (many parts of this book were disgusting to me), Verity by Colleen Hoover (don’t get the hype and did not like the writing style), and Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay (minor spoiler – I don’t like ambiguous endings).

If anyone has any recs I would be so appreciative! I’ve been reading up to a few books per week and am running out of ideas
