Hello, I was someone who hated reading during high school but now I want a place to start getting into books. I want some recommendations on books with great worldbuilding, preferably sci-fi/high fantasy with darker tones and themes.
Stephen Kings stuff is exactly what you’re describing. His older stuff specifically. My favorite is the stand and that really checks your boxes, but it’s very long so that might not be a good starter.

The First Law trilogy might be right up your alley.

the wolf den trilogy. it is set in a brothel in ancient Pompeii and its really good and is very engaging. i’m reading it right now and it’s very immersive and has you rooting and hating characters. it also has darker themes with the main character being enslaved and trying to find a way to be free. it’s not fantasy but it’s definitely fanatical.
