Hi all, I’m looking for survival horror recommendations. I really enjoy books with a small group (or even single person) trying to survive- whether that’s against a monster, regular animals, aliens, the environment. I don’t like crime books so murder mysteries aren’t my thing, which is what a lot of horror books seem to be. I like thrillers and a bit of mystery is okay, but I don’t care for straight mystery books. They don’t keep my attention and they tend to focus on the plot/mystery too much rather the characters actually surviving. I’d much rather read a character running from a monster the whole time than sit through them trying to piece together a mystery.

The Luminous Dead is one of my all time favorite books, and I really enjoyed Dead Silence as well. They were actually creepy and scary, and fit the genre horror to me. I just finished drowning by TJ Newman which was good but not horror (and looking back isn’t a horror book though I could have sworn it was tagged horror, which is why I read it), and just read Camp Damascus by Chuck Tingle which I did like, but despite being tagged horror it wasn’t really a horror book. There was some gore and demons, but it wasn’t scary. I really liked the small group and single situation of Drowning, I love when books are just people surviving in one place rather than a whole long plot going from place to place.

I’m open to genre and topic for the most part- I like sci-fi so space horror is good, demons if they’re not too stereotypical, zombie type things are okay if once again they aren’t stereotypical movie zombies, post-apocalyptic is cool and I like books where there’s a disease that caused it, books set pretty much anywhere away from people (even if that’s a city that just doesn’t have people in it anymore). The only things I don’t enjoy are crime (as stated) and cliches like vampires. Werewolf type monsters are fun but the cliche werewolf idea isn’t very interesting. Otherwise if it’s a single person/small group surviving something and it’s scary, I’ll check it out!
