I’m very picky with books focused around crimes or possible crimes, and prefer things that read like I’m looking over the case on a board, with red string everywhere. The closest thing I’ve read is the Missing 411 books, which had writing that really fit the style I’m looking for.

It can be fictional or true crime, I don’t mind either way.

    1. The Aosawa Murders by Riku Onda, maybe? Or Penance by Eliza Clark? Both are fiction.

“The Appeal” and “The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels” by Janice Hallett (both standalones, you can read in any order).

Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil is a bit more literary than what you’re describing (cc: In Cold Blood) but as far as true crime non-fiction they’re unparalleled. The “red string everywhere” visual really made me think of CHAOS: A Secret History of the 60s which is an absolutely BONKERS deep dive into the Manson murders, debunking the book Helter Skelter (which gets suggested here a lot)– it’s dense but if you get geeked out on investigations and conspiracy theories proving true; this one is stranger than fiction.
